Kia Unveils the New 2021 Niro EV

In February 2021, Kia Motors announced its new plan to expand its electric-vehicle lineup and become a leader in the EV industry. The first-ever dedicated battery-electric vehicle, the 2022 EV6, was launched shortly after this announcement, and Kia hasn’t stopped there. After its introduction in 2017 as Kia’s first dedicated hybrid crossover, the new 2021 Kia Niro EV is finally here with all the style, technology and efficiency of a Kia.

As a part of Kia’s new brand strategy, “Plan S,” Kia aims to sell 1.6 million EV, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) annually by 2030, making up 40% of projected sales. These numbers would position Kia as a top global seller of electric and hybrid vehicles. Included this lineup is the new 2021 Kia Niro: a smart, capable and efficient crossover perfect for the everyday commuter.

The new 2021 Kia Niro EV has the same style and efficiency as the hybrid version with a few updates. It is still powered by the state-of-the-art 64 kWh battery and 201-horsepower electric motor. Although electric vehicles don’t have transmissions, drivers can still have an exciting ride without the gear changes. With 291 lb.-ft. of torque and Sport Mode, there is plenty of oomph for thrill seekers. To focus on efficiency, drivers can take advantage of the Niro EV Eco and Eco+ drive modes. These drive modes automatically adjust regenerative braking level, air conditioning settings and set speed limits to help manage operating efficiency.

Many consumers are wary of electric vehicles due to myths and misconceptions about charging. Charging the 2021 Kia Niro is fast and easy. With the Standard Combined Charging System (CCS) DC fast-charge, the Niro EV can charge approximately 100 miles in 30 minutes or 80 percent battery capacity in just 75 minutes with compatible fast chargers. Charging at home is easy, too. With Level 2 charging, the Niro can charge 100% overnight in just 9 hours.

One of the most fun parts of EV ownership is the futuristic feel of EVs. The 2021 Niro EV has a spaceship-like appearance with a closed-off grille, “arrowhead” LED daytime running lights and 17-inch alloy wheels. While the Niro EV doesn’t have an engine that purrs and revs, it does make an eccentric “whirring” sound like that of a sci-fi spacecraft. Without this unusual hum, the Niro EV would be practically silent, posing a risk to nearby drivers and pedestrians.

Inside, the Niro EV sports charcoal synthetic-leather seats with blue accents and 60/40 folding rear seats for extra cargo space. The available 10.25-inch touchscreen display has standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth compatibility so you’ll have no problem accessing your entertainment. Need a charge? No problem. The available wireless phone charger and standard USB ports ensure that you and your passengers are always connected.
