Kia Motors Plans to Have 11 Electric Vehicles by 2026

February 20th, 2021 by

Kia Motors recently unveiled their plan for the future during the 2021 CEO Investor Day held digitally in Seoul on February 9th, 2021. Their strategy, called “Plan S,” is built on three major pillars:  advancing their electric vehicle (EV) lineup, strengthening their purpose-built vehicle (PBV) business, and expanding future mobility services. With a new logo, new design and a new corporate name in 2021, Kia has launched itself as a brand that is determined to excite customers and grow and adapt to the ever-changing world we live in, and this new strategy is designed to position Kia at the forefront of innovation in the marketplace.

Advancing the Electric Vehicle Lineup

By 2030, Kia plans 1.6 million EV, plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) annually, making up 40% of their yearly sales. As part of this plan, Kia aims to sell 880,000 electric vehicles in 2030 and become a top global seller. By 2026, Kia plans to grow their EV lineup to include 11 electric vehicles, with their first dedicated EV, codenamed CV, launching later this year. They have announced that the 11-vehicle lineup will consist of seven dedicated electric vehicles (new models that are exclusively offered with electric powertrains) built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture and four built on existing ICE derivatives.

Strengthening Purpose-Built Vehicle Business

You’re probably wondering, “what is a purpose-built vehicle?” A purpose-built vehicle is a vehicle designed for a specific purpose like a last-mile delivery, ride sharing or autonomous shuttles. The demand for purpose-built vehicles for ride-sharing or taxis is projected to grow tremendously, and Kia is responding to this demand by introducing their first-ever PBV in 2022.

They also have a goal to sell 1 million units annually by 2030 to become a world leader in PBVs.

Expanding Future Mobility Services

Kia plans to expand their future business-to-consumer and business-to-business mobility services. In the business-to-consumer arena, Kia’s flagship car-sharing service Wible in Spain will be expanded to Wible Más and Wible Empresas. Launched as a pilot program in Italy and Russia, the car usership program KiaMobility will also launch in other European markets.

In the business-to-business and business-to-government markets, Kia plans to launch an EV-based service that will combine subscription and car-sharing.
