2018 Kia Niro Earns Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS
Thursday, 26 July, 2018
The 2018 Kia Niro was the first of its kind — a dedicated hybrid crossover. This popular, and practical, vehicle not only gets really high gas mileage, but it’s super safe as well. The 2018 Niro was recently named a Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+), the highest possible rating, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The 2018 Kia Niro was awarded the rating of TSP+ when equipped with available Forward Collision Warning System, Autonomous Emergency Braking System and high-intensity discharge headlights. This means the Niro earned good ratings in the IIHS crashworthiness tests.
“The Niro is one of our most popular models and receiving the highest possible safety rating from IIHS provides yet another reason why it should be the top choice for anyone shopping for a small hybrid SUV,” Kia Motors America Product Planning VP Orth Headrick said in a statement .
IIHS ratings for most brands and vehicles were released in May and, with eight models on the list, Kia has the most vehicles of any automaker with a TSP+ rating . With the TSP+ rating of the 2018 Kia Niro, the number of Kia vehicles with the top 2018 IIHS rating increases to nine.
President William Freels of the Hyundai America Technical Center — the research and development center for Kia Motors America — said he’s excited about another top rating.
“We’re very pleased with this new TSP+ award for Niro,” Freels said. “It validates our efforts to develop vehicles t hat meet some of the industry’s highest safety standards and it endures the skid and commitment of our designers and engineers.”
In order for a vehicle to qualify for a TSP+ rating, it must earn “Good” ratings in all five of the IIHS crashworthiness tests. Those tests are driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact and roof strength head restraint. The vehicle must also earn a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in passenger side small overlap front; “Advanced” or “Superior” in front crash prevention; and “Good” in headlight testing.
