It’s so hard watching your babies drive off by themselves for the first time. Weren’t they in diapers just yesterday?? Time flew and now they’re in their first car and even starting to think about college.

One thing at a time, though. In order for you to have a little peace of mind while your kids are driving themselves around Little Rock, they need to keep a handful of things in their cars at all times.

At Landers Kia in Little Rock, we want your sons and daughters to be safe. If they keep these items with them at all times, they will be:

Insurance and registration: This one is the only item on this list that is non-negotiable when your teen is driving a car. Make sure they know what these cards look like, where they should be kept and that they’re up-to-date.

Emergency Kit. Grab a small duffel or other bag and put a flashlight, extra batteries, knife, water bottles, blanket, energy bars, glow sticks and a small first aid kit. They’ll come in handy if your kid has a flat tire and has to wait for you or a roadside assistance.

Jumper Cables. Batteries don’t really give you a warning sign before they die. Make sure they know how to use jumper cables too.

GPS. Whether it’s the maps app on their phone, a separate gadget, or navigation in the car itself, this is a necessity for any teenage driver.

Emergency cash. Make sure your son or daughter has at least $50 to stash in the glove box or somewhere hidden in case something comes up and they can’t use a debit or credit card.

Car Jack and tire-changing tools. Flat tires can happen when you least expect them. Make sure they know how to change a tire too.

Sunglasses. Nobody likes to squint while driving on a bright day. More importantly, your teens need to protect their eyes from other reflective vehicles on the road.

Air freshener. Because sometimes your kid’s car can smell just as bad as their room.
