If you’re looking for a new car, chances are you’re looking to either trade in your current vehicle or sell it. If you’re selling, you want to get what the car is worth, but getting a little extra cash never hurt anybody. Whether you wash your car once a year or get it detailed every month, and whether that car is in tip top shape or could use a little work, we’ve got a few tips to get your car ready to sell for the highest profit.

We’ll start with the basics. Before listing your car you must do the following things:

• Clean out all the trash and junk that shouldn’t be in the car in the first place.

• Keep necessary documentation in the glove box and empty all other spaces – center console, door and seat pockets, trunk and don’t forget to look under the seats.

• Vacuum the interior. Bonus if you have a Shop-Vac.

• Wash the car. Do it by hand or take it through an automatic wash, we don’t care. Potential buyers could be turned off if your car isn’t shiny and clean.

Now that we’ve covered the absolute basics, here are a few things that we suggest you do next:

• Check the engine. You don’t want the check engine light coming on when a potential buyer takes it for a test drive.

• Flush out and refill all fluids. Take your car to the local shop or service department and get an oil change. Most of the time they’ll check fluids as part of the oil change. And while you’re at it, have them check tire pressure.

• If anything needs to be repaired, like squeaky brakes or a dent in the fender, get it fixed.

So you’ve done all of the above, but want to go the extra mile.

• Get it detailed. This can make a clean car feel like a new car and prices range from a simple detail to the works.

• Use a camera to photograph it. Phone pictures are just fine, but you’re sure to impress potential buyers with high quality images they can zoom in on.
