Keeping Your Dog Calm During a Road Trip | Landers Kia

So maybe there’s something we love just as much as cars and burgers : our dogs! If you’re a dog mom or dad, you know just how difficult it can be to leave them behind while traveling, or even just for a day trip. We don’t like to stress about a friend or neighbor caring for our pups, and let’s be real here, we miss our dogs when we’re gone!

We love taking our furry friends with us on vacation, but driving with a dog can sometimes be an ordeal. Before you hit the road, stop by the service department at Landers Kia to make sure your car is in tip-top shape and read the following tips to keep you and your fur baby happy.

1. Let your dog run around before hitting the road.

Dogs have way more energy than people, especially puppies. Help them, and you, by taking them on a walk or playing fetch before loading up in the car. By doing this, your dog will be less likely to jump all over the seats and maybe even nap on the road.

2. Stop often.

Yes, this can prolong the drive, but it will make the drive more bearable for everyone. Just like humans start to feel cooped up after a few hours in the car, so do dogs. Take a minute to stretch your legs, let your dog relieve itself and play for a few minutes.

3. Bring a crate just in case.

Your pet won’t be quite as distracting while you’re driving if they’re in their crate for part or all of the drive. If you crate your dog while they are home alone, this could help them calm down and also provide a source of familiarity for them, even in a moving car.

4. Pack a water bowl, treats and toys.

Just like we love our junk food while traveling (Nacho Cheese Doritos) so do our dogs. Make sure you bring food, water and toys to keep them full and occupied while traveling.

5. Don’t leave them alone in a parked car.

When it heats up in the summer, this is especially dangerous. It may be okay to crack the window for your dog to run in a convenience store for a few minutes in the spring, but it’s not the best idea. Take them with you when you stop, if possible, or take turns staying with the dog outside while running inside to buy snacks and use the restroom.
