The Kia Niro debuted last year as Kia’s first-ever dedicated hybrid crossover. For 2018, Kia is introducing the Niro Plug-In Hybrid. What’s the difference between the two, you ask? Keep reading to find out!

CHARGING

The obvious difference between the Niro Hybrid and Niro Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is that the Niro PHEV plugs into a wall outlet or charging station to charge the battery. The Niro PHEV can achieve a full charge in less than nine hours when using a 120V charger (Level 1) or around 2.5 hours when using a 240V charger (Level 2).

The Niro Hybrid uses its regenerative braking system to charge up the battery. When decelerating, the electric traction motor captures kinetic energy to recharge the battery.

POWER

The Niro Hybrid and Niro PHEV are both powered by a gasoline engine and an electric motor, but they use that power differently.

The Kia Niro Hybrid uses a 1.6L gasoline-direct injection four-cylinder engine, electric motor and 1.56 kWh battery to deliver performance and 50 MPG combined.

The hybrid powertrain system works together to produce 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

The Kia Niro PHEV uses the same engine as the Niro Hybrid with an 8.9 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and electric motor.

MPG ratings for the Niro PHEV are similar to the Niro Hybrid at 48 city / 44 highway. However, the PHEV boasts an MPGe rating of 105.

The Niro PHEV has the ability to drive using only electric power. With an EPA-estimated all-electric driving range of 26 miles, Niro PHEV allows driver to consume less gas in most driving conditions. The crossover produces zero emissions in all-electric mode. Total driving range is rated at up to an estimated 560 miles when both electric and gasoline systems work together, giving you the ability to take long road trips in your PHEV as well as all-day electric driving.
